December 26, 2010
7:00pm to 10:00pm
BlackFinn Restaurant & Saloon
1001 Haxall Point
Suite 100
Richmond, VA 23219

Come on out for the annual Alumni Holiday Reception, this year hosted by the Richmond Alumni Chapter at BlackFinn Restaurant & Saloon.

Catch up with old friends and make new ones while enjoying free hors d'oeuvres like mini wedge salad bites or cheese quesadillas. Keep an eye on the restaurant's flatscreen monitors as pictures from the past flash by.
We are making an effort this year to get teachers to come out to the reception. If you have a current or former Governor's School teacher that you would like us to invite, please let us know at richmondalumni@governorsschoolfoundation.org

Parking info for BlackFinn is very important. Learn it and love it

Governor's School Night at the VMFA!

Tonight! December 2nd! Meet up with other alumni and friends at the new and improved Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for the Chapter's first educational event. The VMFA's "art after dark" night promises to be a good time.

The official start time is 6:30, but you are welcome to come early and grab a bite to eat in the Best Cafe on the main level. The Billy Williams Trio will be performing at 6:00 as part of Jazz Cafe.

We will be free to roam about the museum and take in all it has to offer on our own, though if you want a more structured experience, there is a walking tour of the museum's highlights from 8:15 until closing at 9:00.

Hope to see you there!

November Events Recap

November was a great month for the Richmond Alumni Chapter as we really started to get some great events going. The happy hour at Europa was a nice way to unwind after work and the specials couldn't be beat (1/2 off tapas until 6 and good drink discounts as well). Ask Recruitment Chair Stacy Lee (2nd from left) what her favorite tapas was the next time you see her at an event!
Thanks to everyone who came out and volunteered at the Richmond Marathon. We had a great crew working to quench the thirsts of the tired and parched runners as they hit mile 24 of the marathon and 11 of the half. I can probably say that none of us had mixed Powerade with a paddle in a trash can before (don't worry runners. It was a clean can and we used liners!!) We also had fantastic support from students and alumni at the spirit stop who cheered the runners on at a time when they certainly needed it. Surely, the sounds of Spice Girls and The Romantics won't be fading from their minds for some time! Most thanks go to our Community Outreach Chair Khiem Tran who ventured out at something like 5:00 in the morning to set up the stops, then proceeded to run the half-marathon, and then came back to work for the rest of the day! Steering Committee Chair Kristina Monan Page showed up around 5:30 and didn't run the half but did work all day, so she get's a half-percent less props. Thanks again to everyone else who came out to make this first service event a tremendous success!

Message from the Chair-Kristina Monan Page

Welcome members of the Governor's School Family!

The excitement surrounding the formation of our Richmond Chapter of the Governor's School Alumni Association has energized and inspired me.  I thank all of you who have enthusiastically tackled our start up programming and all of you who have expressed interest in joining us as founding members. As we move forward with this endeavor we hope to develop engaging programming to capture our sense of fun, our commitment to service, and our interest in intellectual pursuits.

Our vision includes: fostering a broad sense of alumni community; supporting alumni interests; reaching out to the school community in a meaningful way; and making a positive impact in the broader community in which we live.  Not to mention, having fun!

Since we have just begun our journey, we need your help in making it a success.  Come out to our upcoming events, submit your ideas for future programming, volunteer for a committee, and SPREAD THE WORD!

Next up is our Alumni Happy Hour-- a chance to connect in a relaxed atmosphere and get to know some new people.  All are welcome to join us on 11/3 at 5:30pm at Europa in downtown Richmond.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Volunteer and have fun at the Richmond Chapter's first service event!

Help expand the Governor's School Alumni's presence in the Richmond community by handing out water at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon/McDonald's Half Marathon. Our water stop will be located on Lombardy Street between VUU and Maggie Walker at Mile 24 of the full marathon and Mile 11 of the half. This is a great way to connect with current Governor's School students at the neighboring race Spirit Group setup on school grounds. There will be two shifts, one from 11am to 1pm, and the second from 1pm to 3pm.

Find out more info on the Governor's School Alumni Facebook page

And sign up to help out at the event here

Also if you are running in the marathon and want to carb out, or if you aren't running and just want to hang out, come to Noodles and Co. at Willow Lawn the night before the race for a pasta dinner social event. Details on that can be found here http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=135767866475784

Happy Hour on November 3rd

Join us at Europa in the bottom for good times and if you're interested, good tapas. Folks from the Richmond Alumni Chapter and friends will be hanging out from 5:30 to 7:30 or so.

Europa is located at 1409 E Cary St, and you can check out their menus here http://www.europarichmond.com/index.php

We hope to see you there!

2010 Fall Festival and Alumni Reception

There was a great turnout for what Pat Taylor called the biggest Fall Festival yet! Your Richmond Alumni Chapter officers manned (and wo-manned) the Foundation table and welcomed all alumni to the festival. In total, 130 alumni stopped by the table, and 38 joined the Richmond Alumni Chapter! If you weren't one of those cool 38 people and want to be cool like them, send an email to richmondalumni@governorsschoolfoundation.org and get on the mailing list.

The Class of 2000 showed up en masse for their 10-year reunion. We also saw members of the original GSGIS Class of 1995 in town for their 15th. The Alumni Reception at Bottoms Up was equally packed and it certainly appeared that a good time was had by all. Thanks to everyone for coming out, signing up, and getting down!
